Stylianidis Appointed Special Envoy for the Promotion of Freedom of Religion Outside the EU

BRUSSELS — The European Commission, in an announcement, noted that it has appointed Christos Stylianidis as a special envoy for the promotion of freedom of religion or belief outside the EU.

The decision enters into force immediately. The special envoy will report to European Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schinas, who is responsible for leading the Commission's dialogue with churches and religious associations or communities, as well as with philosophical organisations.

Freedom of religion or belief is under attack in many parts of the world. This decision shows the Commission's commitment to address this challenge and to ensure that the rights of all religions and beliefs are respected. The Special Envoy will enter into dialogue with national authorities and other stakeholders in countries discriminated against on the basis of religion or belief. It will support intercultural and interfaith dialogue processes, including encouraging dialogue between representatives of different religions and setting up joint initiatives.
