Olympia Theater to Reopen for Season on Saturday

ATHENS — The historic Olympia Theater on Akadimias Street, home to the National Opera of Greece until 2017, will reopen on Saturday with a repertory of opera and other music, without excluding other arts such as theater, visual arts and dance.

New artistic director of the theater, Olivier Descotes, said during a presentation on Wednesday that the program of the Municipal Olympia Theater "Maria Callas" as it is officially known will focus on three landmark anniversaries for Greece: the bicentennial of the Greek Revolution, the centennial of the Asia Minor Disaster, and the birthday of late author Iacovos Kampanellis.

With a budge of 450,000 euros and funding from Dior, along with stage sets provided by the National Opera as a gift for one of the plays, Olympia will reopen with a performance of "Achilles – Greece Imploring", based on the performance of Bijoux de Kant theater troupe and the heroic drama "Achilles" (1804, by Athanassios Christopoulos).

Entrance is allowed only for those fully vaccinated (at least 14 days prior to attendance) or a certificate of having recuperated from Covid-19 (no more than 6 months since diagnosis).
