Greek National Opera Presents Its Summer Program

ATHENS — As Greece adjusts to the rhythm of the new normal, the Greek National Opera (GNO) turns from shuttered stages to live shows with a rich program of performances and concerts in unexpected spaces all around Athens.

Dance, performance art, recitals, concerts, an art installation, and more will be presented at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the Numismatic Museum, and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), among other venues throughout the city.

The program of events will kick off with a GNO concert celebrating the 200-year anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821, “Hymn to Liberty,” which will take place in collaboration with the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens in the cathedral’s courtyard.

A highlight of the program is the Verdi All-Star Gala, which will take place on July 10 at the Panathenaic Stadium, starring the leading operatic soprano of the 21st century, Anna Netrebko, internationally renowned mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili, distinguished tenor Yusif Eyvazov, and the top Greek baritone, Dimitri Platanias. These four world-renowned opera stars, who have distinguished themselves in Verdi’s operatic masterpieces, will perform famous arias and duets from Aida, Il trovatore, La traviata, La forza del destino, Otello, Rigoletto, and others. The GNO Orchestra will be conducted by renowned French conductor Philippe Auguin.
