Cyprus Republic Parliament Speaker Omirou: We Don’t Need the Gurantees

Yiannakis Omirou, President of the House of Representatives  declared that inclusion of the “anachronistic system” of guarantees in a Cyprus agreement would undermine the foundations of the solution.

Omirou was referring comments made by Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias and new Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci that the solution does not need guarrantor powers.

“The solution of the Cyprus problem while retaining the anachronistic guarantees of 1960 would constitute a mine in the foundations of the solution itself,” Omirou said, and CNA noted that he said “there is important legal basis to challenge the validity of Cyprus` Treaty of Guarrantee.”

NICOSIA — Thousands of workers in Cyprus, including government employees, teachers and builders walked off the job Thursday for an island-wide, three-hour work stoppage to protest what they claim is employers’ backpedaling on a deal for inflation-linked pay increases.
