Century-Old Anopoli Homemade Ice Cream Parlor Closes in Brooklyn

September 24, 2022

It wasn’t said why – speculation indicated a rent increase or the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic – but Anopoli, a family-owned Greek diner in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, has shut down after more than a century in business.

Owner Steve Saviolakis, who ran it for 26 years, put an announcement on the door that said: “We decided it is time to close the doors.” He thanked customers for their loyalty and devotion to the giant sundaes, reported Brooklyn Paper.

It had an old vintage feel, with green vinyl booths, tiled floors, and a nostalgic bar counter showing the treats, the report said, news of the closure sending people to social media to talk of the regret of its loss.

Bianca Papas, who runs a Facebook page highlighting southern Brooklyn bars and restaurants, told the site that the said the business was a big part of Bay Ridge’s food culture.

“Anopoli has always been known as (one of) the oldest restaurants in Bay Ridge. It’s absolutely iconic to Bay Ridge,” Papas said. “This is another thing we’re losing that’s a part of our history here. Hopefully someone will salvage it and keep it charming.”
