ATHENS – While the ruling New Democracy and SYRIZA, which it unseated in July, 2019 snap polls will have a rematch in mid-2023 elections, Greece’s third-place PASOK Socialists are attacking them both.

The PASOK-KINAL center-left’s party new leader Nikos Androulakis, also a Member of the European Parliament, said the two dominant parties have phony concern for the welfare of people and then exploiting it.

His party put forth an amendment in Parliament controlled by the Conservatives to “protect anew primary homes,” after the government allowed banks to start seizing people’s homes if they couldn’t pay their mortgages.

Primary homes had previously been protected for a decade after a long economic and austerity crisis during which Greece had to rely on three international bailouts of 326 billion euros ($339.51 billion) to stay afloat.

The amendment would put New Democracy and SYRIZA – which during its 4 ½ years reign said it would help homeowners – in a tight spot of having to vote it down if they don’t agree.

Androulakis, whose phone was earlier tapped by the National Intelligence Service EYP and an attempt was made to install Predator spyware on it, toured the Piraeus area of Keratsini and talked about the fear people have of losing their homes, said the state-run Athens-Macedonia News Agency ANA-MPA.

He criticized the government and SYRIZA for “political hypocrisy,” according to a party statement in which he said that, “New Democracy and Syriza are shedding crocodile tears over the despair and agony of thousands of Greek borrowers.”

He noted that, “New Democray annulled the legislative framework protecting primary home, while SYRIZA turned over all nonperforming loans to funds. But there are, in addition, debts to the state, that’s why we propose 120 installments for debts to insurance funds and the tax service.”

He was referring to the Leftists letting banks sell off bad mortgage loans to vulture funds that are hounding people to pay even if they can’t while political parties that owe banks money aren’t paying it back nor being pressed.

Androulakis said that, “Only choices that reduce inequalities provide a future for viable development and can set up a better future for the Greek people and Greek youth,” accusing New Democracy of elitism and SYRIZA of populism.
