Meropi Kyriacou Honored as TNH Educator of the Year
NEW YORK – Meropi Kyriacou, the new Principal of The Cathedral School in Manhattan, was honored as The National Herald’s Educator of the Year.
He’s as Greek as it gets, so you know actor Chris Sarandon, who in The Princess Bride played a menacing character famous for saying “skip to the end,” knows how to cook – and his dad owned a restaurant.
Now 80, he’s begun a food podcast on Apple called Cooking by Heart, and lives in Connecticut. He is known for a long line of iconic roles but his mind’s in the kitchen these days and back with his family upbringing.
At home, his mother made traditional Greek dishes like youvarlakia, a soup combining the savory richness of ground meat, mint, rice and other spices with the citrusy zing of avgolemono, said CT Insider.
“It’s an island stew from the Greek islands,” Sarandon said. “My mother would make it and I would watch her. She passed on that tradition to me, and I’ve passed it on to my children and my grandchildren.”
The family ran a restaurant in Beckley, West Virginia but not with Greek food, coal miner wanting All-American fare. “There were lots of you know, burgers and grilled cheese and soups, but also lots of fresh food,” Sarandon said.
