SNF Nostos: Health

ATHENS – SNF Nostos, the major public event the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) holds each summer, is all about human connection, dialogue, self-reflection, and sharing joy. This past summer, in spite of the difficult circumstances created by the pandemic, we were able to get together to celebrate it in person, focusing on the topic of Humanity and Artificial Intelligence.

As we look with optimism toward the future and make plans for the next SNF Nostos, we hope that conditions in June 2022 will allow us to gather in person again, a little more freely this time, to enjoy the SNF Nostos Run, the SNF Nostos Conference, and the SNF Dialogues. Each night of the two-day event will close with a headline concert, followed by a spectacular drone show in the night sky like the one that delighted visitors at 2021 SNF Nostos —the very first show of its kind ever to take place in Greece.

In the summer of 2022, we as a society will be in a position to discuss, with more clarity and greater depth of perspective, how the pandemic has redefined the most fundamental aspect of our lives: health—both physical and mental, on the individual and collective levels.

SNF’s Health Initiative* will be the core focus of the 2022 SNF Nostos Conference. Sessions will expand from there, seeking to look at where the world stands on urgent questions related to health, broadly defined. Together, we’ll take an inside look at the Foundation’s efforts on this front, strive to bring to the fore the issues that will define tomorrow’s health care, seek to share best practices, and convene thinkers from diverse disciplines in an effort to understand how to collectively improve the health infrastructure we all rely on.

SNF Nostos returns on June 23 and 24, 2022, as always free and open to all, bringing us together again for a bold and thought-provoking experience.

SNF Health Initiative
The SNF Health Initiative is a multifaceted and ambitious set of projects developed and implemented through an exclusive grant of over $500 million from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF). Harnessing the power of public-private partnerships, and in collaboration with the Hellenic Ministry of Health, the initiative aims to strengthen public health in Greece, empower medical staff, and enhance both access to health services and the quality of care. The Health Initiative focuses on four main pillars: infrastructure, equipment, education, and mental health. It includes major new construction projects around Greece—the new SNF General Hospital of Komotini, the SNF University Pediatric Hospital of Thessaloniki, and the new SNF General Hospital of Sparta—as well as infrastructure projects at key hospitals in Athens, such as Evangelismos General Hospital and the Attikon General University Hospital. At the same time, the initiative is outfitting hospitals throughout Greece with state-of-the-art equipment, such as PET/CT equipment, and has ensured two new planes and two new helicopters to strengthen the National Center for Emergency Care’s (EKAV) air ambulance services. The initiative also supports five-year training programs for doctors, nurses, first responders, and students on traumain-hospital infections, nursing, and intensive care. In 2021, SNF expanded the scope of the Initiative and, in collaboration with the Child Mind Institute and the Ministry of Health, added a new program aimed at revamping mental health care for children and youth across Greece. Like all of SNF’s grantmaking, the Health Initiative aims to empower humanity, in this case by making health care accessible to all, especially to those most in need.
