For many people, the rule of law is one of the primary points of differentiation between a banana republic and a nation of the so-called, ‘first world’. American exceptionalism, drilled into us from our grade school days, backed up by a litany of facts, some true, some skewed, makes us feel that the United States of America is the leading nation of the free world, and it opposes banana republics both in the Americas and around the world. So how is it that we got here?

William Barr, The Attorney General of the United States of America has seemingly forfeited his duties as the top law enforcement officer in this country, the lawyer of the people, so that he may become the personal attorney of the President of the United States.

It was not supposed to be this way – the attorney general should not be the personal lawyer of the President of the United States in his capacity in the Justice Department and using taxpayer money. It’s also a question of morality, a Rubicon often crossed by this administration, when it comes to that question of morality. At seemingly every fork in the road, they routinely pick the wrong path. This administration would make renowned wordsmith Robert frost blush at the thought of taking the road less traveled and making all the difference. In this particular moment in history, the difference has been overtly negative. I am not speaking on the politics of the president. It would be presumptuous of me to declare everything of his to be wrong, and completely negate any possible arguments his supporters might have. However, I do think that whether any American supports or dislikes the president, they should very much be troubled by an Attorney General who has already served in another administration pretending this his first rodeo. He cannot proclaim he’s a newcomer and learning the job.

The bedrock of this Republic is that there is no one above the law, but seemingly on a routine basis, this president believes, empowered by his attorney general, that somehow he and his circle are exempt from the rule of law. Such behavior would be more than recognizable in places like Russia, China, Iraq, Libya, Turkey, etc. but not here – not in the United States. Without the rule of law, this country ceases to be the greatest country the world has ever known. The great American experiment would be dead after 244 years. Don’t let them get way with this.
