Greek-American Artist Kostas Seremetis Featured in Hypebeast

July 29, 2021

NEW YORK – Greek-American artist Kostas Seremetis launched his first ever HypeArt collaboration, a series titled The All Mighty with 43 original prints, Hypebeast reported on July 24. The Boston-native is the son of Greek immigrants from Laconia, specifically Krokeai, Sparta. A painter, sculptor and filmmaker, he has also worked with musicians such as John Mayer and A$AP Rocky on various projects.

Seremetis and HypeArt’s The All Mighty collection of prints and original works is now available on HBX, Life, Hypebeast reported, adding that “the collection features artworks with Kostas’ illustrative interpretations of Greek ephemera, iconic characters and more,” including “43 original works (KS001-KS043), numbered limited edition prints (KS044-KS047, 25 each) as well as yellow and black variants (KS048-KS051, five apiece).”

Based in Hudson, NY, Seremetis “is the celebrated artist known for his bold representation of realities in popular culture spanning over a decade,” Hypebeast reported, noting that “his illustrative practice encompasses painting, film and sculpture that feature abstract representations of nostalgic characters such as Mickey Mouse, Felix the Cat and others.”

“Inspired by his Spartan background, the artist often recalls ancient works in his visual art pieces such as statues and Greek ephemera,” Hypebeast reported, adding that Seremetis “had his first solo exhibition at the Mary Anthony Gallery in New York City (1997) and has shown in group exhibitions among artists like Gerhard Richter and Jean-Michel Basquiat at Murakamiʼs KaiKai Kiki Gallery in Tokyo, Japan.”

“Having lived, worked and exhibited internationally, his evolving aesthetic approach continues to explore archetypes, popular culture and concepts of mythology in cross pollinated themes,” Hypebeast reported.

Seremetis told Hypebeast that “it is a fantastic journey to be perpetual in painting and collage, exploring the mysticism in co-creation. The All Mighty are interpretations of my vision and experience.”

Seremetis’ inspiration comes from music, from growing up as the son of Greek immigrants and his varied interest in pop culture. “For his interdisciplinary work, he culls visuals from comic books, science fiction, classic paintings, animation cartoons, graffiti, and Greek mythology,” Hypebeast reported, noting that “he began showing his work at the age of 19 in Boston.”

In 1994, Seremetis “was commissioned by the Warner Bros. Studio Store, where he had three sold-out exhibitions” and since then “has amassed a large international following,” Hypebeast reported, adding that “he exhibited in renowned art spaces around the world including major art cities such as Paris, Berlin, and London to New York, Los Angeles, and Tokyo.”

When asked about his relationship to painting and its importance to him, Seremetis told Hypebeast that “these superheroes and cartoons are like modern day mythology that everyone can relate to. Just like the ancient Greek gods and goddesses that are still prominent in present day society. I’m an artist that continues to fill the gaps and listens to the universe’s calling. I’m constantly jamming and mixing these characters while having a dialogue with them. I’m obeying this feeling that I have when painting.”

“For me, the subject matter sometimes doesn’t matter,” Seremetis continued, Hypebeast reported, “art doesn’t really matter as long as you show up. You have to be present when painting and let the canvas be a mirror to your feelings. I would never trade my career with anyone else’s. It’s incredible to get support from other artists, but I’m just happy to paint. To be myself.”
