Santorini Named World’s Best Island

With Greece enjoying what looks to be a second straight record-breaking tourism season – led by its islands – one of its most famous, Santorini, has been named the world’s best.

The honor came from the New York-based Travel + Leisure magazine, one of the world’s most prestigious, with 4.8 million readers, which said the Greek island had won the top award for 2014 over nine others.

The volcanic island, which has become a favorite celebrity and wedding destination over the past few years thanks to its unique landscapes, stunning sunsets and picturesque villages, scored 89.98 points, just ahead of two of Hawaii’s best, Maui, which scored 89.51 points. and Kauai, with 88.59 points.

The island also won in the Best European Island category with a score of 89.98, above Capri’s 85.36 and Crete’s 84.30 points.

More than 1.5 million tourists are estimated to visit the island, which has a population of around 15,500 residents (2011 census), each year. Santorini and Myconos annually vie for world honors among the best islands, although both are overrun during the summer and not a place to visit if you want solitude.
