Endless Falling by Eva Papamargariti depicts a 3D character originally created on ZBrush. The fleshy, organ-like, mythical uncanny creature moves around in a weird choreography, appearing to be dancing at times, simply trying to balance on its feet only to fall over and get back up again. Based between London and Athens, Papamargariti was raised in Greece where she graduated from the Department of Architecture, University of Thessaly with a Diploma in Architecture in 2012. She earned an MA in Visual Communication Design at Royal College of Art, London in 2016.
Papamargariti has exhibited her work in cities including New York, Los Angeles, Paris, London, Berlin, Seattle, Amsterdam, Shanghai, Toronto, Montreal, and Athens and at institutions and festivals including the New Museum, the Whitney Museum, Tate Britain, MAAT Museum (Lisbon), Museum of the Moving Image, MoMA PS1, Montreal’s Museum of Contemporary Art, the Athens Biennale, the Thessaloniki Biennale, and the Transmediale Festival in Berlin.
Her work is featured in private collections such as Dakis Joannou Collection (Deste Foundation), PCAI Collection, and more. Recently, she collaborated with and created work for different brands like NIKE, Kenzo, Boiler Room, MTV, Diesel, and River Island, among others.
Papamargariti spoke with The National Herald about Daata and her work.
TNH: How did you become involved with the project?
Eva Papamargariti: The last few years I have collaborated many times with Daata and their platform. I’ve been already commissioned to create a sequence of videos with the title `The Hollow Sound of Longing’ that are available on Daata Editions and recently became available as NFTs [non-fungible tokens] as well. As an extension to our already fruitful collaboration David Gryn and the Daata team suggested to me the idea of creating an AR project. I always wanted to create an augmented work as it is organically connected to my practice and mentality as an artist, so I immediately accepted. That is how we started creating ‘Endless Falling.’
TNH: How long did the commissioned artwork take from idea to realization?
EP: As soon as we agreed to the idea I started collaborating closely with Luke Greig who helped immensely to bring my concept into actualization. The whole process lasted two months, with lots of tests and email exchanges. The idea is to create this weird creature that has some human-like features but is not entirely human, that is struggling to find its bodily balance. It keeps falling but also in a magical way always stands back on its feet again and again, engaging in this uncanny choreography.
pursuing a career as an artist?
EP: I started becoming interested in the arts while I was already studying architecture. I wasn’t sure that this is what I would like to do, but somehow I was very intensely drawn to it and particularly in digital mediums in order to create these otherworldly environments that inhabit my work. Gradually this became a very natural way for me to express myself and dig deeper into my thoughts and desires, so now I would say that I cannot imagine myself not doing art.
TNH: What are you working on next?
EP: I am working on new commissioned works that will be part of shows that will take place in galleries in Athens during the next two months, a large scale solo audiovisual presentation of my work that will take place as part of MIRA Festival in December and another commissioned work for an exhibition that will take place in March at GAMeC gallery in Italy.
