Meropi Kyriacou Honored as TNH Educator of the Year
NEW YORK – Meropi Kyriacou, the new Principal of The Cathedral School in Manhattan, was honored as The National Herald’s Educator of the Year.
ATHENS — More firefighting forces joined that ones already battling the blaze in Nea Makri on Wednesday. The fire broke out at a forest area in the coastal Attica town of Nea Makri.
The fire brigade said that that no inhabited areas are endagered for the time being.
12 fire engines with a 41-member crew, three teams of firefighers on foot, two firefighting aircraft and 2 water dropping helicopters are operating in the area.
Police has proceeded to traffic changes in the wider region due the fire.
Another fire broke out on Wednesday in a forest area at Kalyvia, eastern Attica.
Strong winds are blowing in the area while there are some houses in the area.
A total of 30 firefighters with 11 fire engines, two aircrafts and three helicopters are operating in the area as well as volunteer fire fighters.
A settlement and a boarding school at Kalyvia evacuated
The settlement of Feriza and a boarding school in Kalivia, Attica, were evacuated a while ago due to the ongoing fire. The thirty children of the school were transferred to a hotel.
"So far there is no report of burned houses in the settlement of Feriza, where the fire has reached," the press spokesman of the Fire Brigade, Vassilis Vathrakogiannis, said to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency,
The fire brigade operating in the area has been reinforced and in particular there are 40 firefighters with 16 vehicles, 1 ground team on foot, 2 aircraft and 4 helicopters.
Police also made traffic arrangements in the area due to the fire.
High risk of fire on Thursday
The risk of fire will be very high on Thursday in four Greek regions, according to the Civil Protection General Secretariat forecast map .
Particularly the regions of Attica including the island of Kythira, Sterea Ellada , the Peloponnese and the northern Aegean area in category 4 .
The Civil Protection General secretariat has informed the responsible state authorities as well as the regions and municipalities facing high risk of fire to be on high alertness.
The general secreatariat recommends citizens to be exteremely cautious and to avoid actions in the countryside that may provoke a fire by negligence as the burning of dry grass or garbage, throwing lit cigarettes or use of machines producing sparks as well as the use of barbeques
