Re: “New St. Nicholas at Ground Zero, Byzantine Style (TNH, Nov. 2).
It is ridiculous for the New York Times to simply write (without explaining) that the architecture of the new St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at the World Trade Center is “based on buildings in Turkey that were used for Islamic worship,” meaning Hagia Sophia and the Church of the Holy Savior in Chora.
Both of those had been in Constantinople for hundreds of years before the Turks renamed the glorious Greco-Roman city into “Istanbul” paraphrasing the Greeks who were saying, I am going “is tin polin”, in English “to the city.” Hagia Sophia existed long before there was Islam and Islam copied Hagia Sophia for its bigger mosques, not the other way around!
