“We Ride Faster Than Cancer” – A Virtual Bike Ride for Those Who Beat Cancer

ΑΤΗΕΝS — The KEFI Association of Cancer Patients organizes the 1st Bike Ride – Virtual Edition, on June 6, 2021, on the occasion of World Cancer Survivors’ Day. Our motto is "We Ride Faster Than Cancer". We hope this ride will become an annual event and one more springboard in the fight against cancer.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will take place virtually. Literally any individual or group can participate from wherever they can or want. Essentials: Having the “KEFI” (high spirited) and the goodwill to offer to the patient, to their environment and to society.

June 6th, World Cancer Survivors’ Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have been defeated by cancer and a celebration for all survivors. Since June 3rd is World Bicycle Day, we invite you to put on your t-shirt, ride your bike, at home or outdoors, alone or with friends and family, and send your photo as a message of empathy, optimism for the overall treatment of the disease and empowerment of all young and elder fighters. We aim, through this action, to meet, to share beautiful moments, to join forces for a common cause.

At the same time, we seize the opportunity to link the importance of physical exercise with prevention, early diagnosis, treatment of oncological diseases and the rehabilitation of survivors into society. Increasing research evidence shows the positive effects of exercise as a means of aiding the physical and mental health of cancer patients. With medical guidance, every patient can benefit from the gains of an active lifestyle.

Furthermore, with this event we aim at expanding KEFI’s most important program, "Together Also At Home" which consists of providing psychosocial support to cancer patients to improve their quality of life.

Due to the COVID19 pandemic, many people experience a very difficult time. Loneliness and uncertainty are not new to cancer patients, as they are required to take precautions since their diagnosis. The pandemic, however, has brought about additional difficulties in their lives, while it has also challenged the entire cancer care system. In this context, small and decentralized structures have a catalytic role with their immediate assistance. "Together At Home" is a program designed to cater to such needs.

Its services include: a) providing psychological and social support to help patients accept their diagnosis, avoid quittingtheir treatment, regain self-confidence, and manage stress and depression, b) supporting families and caregivers as well as promoting their social role and c) providing information on the patient's rights and social benefits and also guiding them through the procedure to claim said benefits. Its services are provided free of charge. The program did not stop during the pandemic, but it has undergone some necessary modifications in the way of contact with patients.

We consider it necessary to continue, strengthen and expand, through collaborations, both this and other projects that we carry out. That is our purpose. For all the reasons above, we do not abandon the past, as a part of our history, our present and our future. Ourselves and our people.
