Vasilios Stathakos, Federation of Hellenic Societies of NY Honorary President, Dies at 92

NEW YORK – The Greek-American community was saddened by the news of the death of the honorary president and benefactor of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, Vasilios (Bill) Stathakos, who passed away at the age of 92. The family of the deceased noted that his death occurred on the morning of April 14, just hours before the Greek-American community was set to march in the Greek Independence Parade in honor of the 203rd anniversary of the start of the Greek Revolution.

Born on August 14, 1931 in Anogeia, Laconia, where he grew up, Vasilios Stathakos was the child of one of the many families that lived through the hardships of that difficult time period. His parents were Panagiotis and Aikaterini Stathakos, and beside Vasilios, they had three other sons, Dimitris, Giannis, who died prematurely during the Second World War, and Nikolaos.

In 1958, Vasilios Stathakos married his lifelong partner, Maria, with whom they initially had two children, Aikaterini and Panagiotis. As happened in his paternal family, Vasilios Stathakos experienced the pain of losing a child at a young age, since Panagiotis also passed away prematurely. Years later, when the Stathakos family gave birth to another child, they also christened him Panagiotis, who was active at a young age in the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York.

Vasilios Stathakos advanced professionally and socially in the difficult arena of New York and, subsequently, he also got involved with the common people of the community, serving as president of the Federation. He will always be remembered for donating $600,000 towards the purchase of the Federation’s headquarters which bears his name, the Stathakion Cultural Center, and also as honorary president of the Federation.

Stathakos was predeceased by his wife who passed away in 2020. He is survived by his children, Ekaterini (Roger Petticord), Hariklia (John Tsialas), Panagiotis (Emily Gibbons), grandchildren Sasha and Zoe Petticord, Nicolette-Marie and Nicholas Vasilios Tsialas and other relatives.

The visitation for Vasilios Stathakos will take place Thursday, April 18, 4-9 PM, at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Brooklyn, 64 Schermerhorn Street, where the funeral service will also be held on Friday, April 19, 10 AM. The interment will take place at Greenwood Cemetery, next to the resting place of his wife, Maria.
