Meropi Kyriacou Honored as TNH Educator of the Year
NEW YORK – Meropi Kyriacou, the new Principal of The Cathedral School in Manhattan, was honored as The National Herald’s Educator of the Year.
NIKOSIA -With fears that conflicts could spread in the Mideast, the USS Wasp, an American amphibious assault ship docked in Cyprus as part of a pre-arranged visit could be used to take civilians out of harm’s way, Ambassador Julie Fisher said on X.
“The visit comes at a time when the United States continues all efforts along with key partners to de-escalate regional tensions and to be prepared to support civilians in crisis,” she said, noted The Times of Israel as Israel’s invasion of the Gaza Strip in a hunt for Hamas terrorist continues and has escalated.
Cyprus, a member of the European Union, has been a conduit to get humanitarian aid to Palestinians trapped in Gaza during the war amid worries that it could spill over into Lebanon over Hezbollah missile attacks on Israel.
Cyprus has also offered to help get European and third country nationals out of the Mideast if the crisis worsens, Israel expected to retaliate against Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran and the terrorist’s leader earlier threatening Cyprus.
“Humanitarian assistance is what we do,” said government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, Cypriot officials having said they are not involved in military operations in any way and were surprised by the threats.
Iran has pledged to exact “harsh punishment” on Israel for the July 31 assassination in Tehran of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied its role in the killing.
Israel is also awaiting a response from Hezbollah, whose top military commander Fuad Shukr was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Beirut, hours before the blast that killed Haniyeh. Israel said Shukr was responsible for the July 27 missile attack that killed 12 children in the Golan Heights, the Israeli newspaper added.
US officials have warned Iran that a large-scale attack on Israel could lead to an all-out war, 10 months after the war in Gaza was sparked by Hamas’s October 7 onslaught, which killed nearly 1,200 people and saw 251 taken hostage.
Iran’s proxies have warned Cyprus, which houses a British military base from which the US and United Kingdom have launched some airstrikes against Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels attacking ships.
