WASHINGTON – While wanting to provide Turkey with F-16 fighter jet upgrades, the United States has lauded Greece’s role in NATO and continues to try to side with both sides and add to its military presence in Greece.
US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Erika Olson, ahead of an official visit by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to Washington, said Greece is an important ally and has played a role in backing the defense alliance during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
She said that the US is grateful that Greece remains a stable and trusted NATO ally and noted that relations between the countries are at an all-time high – a phrase frequently repeated – noted the state-run Athens-Macedonia News Agency AMNA about the US stance.
She said Mitsotakis’ upcoming visit is a linchpin in the ties between the countries and not just over military issues, coming as he welcomed a Greek-American, George Tsunis, as the new US Ambassador.
During his visit to Washington, Mitsotakis will address a joint congressional session, the first time a Greek premier has been invited by the Speaker of the House to address the body.
Asked about Turkish provocations, including sending fighter jets into Greek air space and wanting to drill for energy off Greek islands, Olson said the US remains committed to stability, which means trying to balance the ties with both countries.
