Update on Greek-American George Tyras Killed in Tragic Car Accident in the Bronx

NEW YORK – Greek-American George Tyras, 25, son of the well-known businessman Mike Tyras, died tragically in a horrible car accident that took place in the Bronx in the early hours of Friday, May 21.

According to NBC New York, it all happened just before 12:30 AM on the Major Deegan Expressway, when the BMW in which Tyras was driving with a woman – for whom the details have not yet been released- crashed into the back of a tractor trailer belonging to the company Whole Foods. The two young people were killed instantly.

"It was something unexpected, sudden, there are no words of consolation for the family," Kassian Society President George Mastromanolis, who knows the Tyras family as well as the deceased.

"It is very difficult for us. George was an active member of the youth of our Society, while he also performed music at our events. We cannot believe it, we had other incidents, we lost so many people in last 2-3 months," said Mr. Mastromanolis.

George Tyras is the son of Evdokia and Michalis Tyras, who, together with his brother, Konstantinos, are the owners of the company Victory Food Service, which imports Greek products and is one of the most reliable suppliers.

George Tyras also leaves behind his brother, Minas.

Although the police did not officially identify him, the tragic news spread very quickly, as the young man's friends expressed their pain and condolences on social media, in disbelief that the thread of his life was cut so unexpectedly.

Late in the evening on May 21, friends and colleagues of the deceased spontaneously held a rally in his memory, in the parking lot of the Food Fest Depot, to honor him, praying for his soul and lighting hundreds of candles.

The most tragic figures were his father, Michalis Tyras, his brother, Minas, and his uncle, Konstantinos, who lit their candles and participated in the tribute in memory of the young man, who passed away at such a young age.

"George was the best and most handsome young man, the most filotimos man I have ever met," the family's koumbaro, Christos Paraschakis, told The National Herald. “It is a moment where we are speechless. A young man, 25 years old, with all his life ahead of him. What happened stops the mind. Our sadness is unspeakable. George was an intelligent young man, from a good family and his father, a businessman, he was an active member of the company and suddenly everything stopped.”

Apart from his business activity with his father and uncle, George Tyras was also known for his involvement with music and entertainment. Appearing as a DJ at many events, he was the "life of the party" and was especially beloved.

"What I will always remember about George is that he was always smiling. A man who, if you were not well, would brighten your mood. He loved Greece, Kassos, and music very much. He was at parties, at Central and elsewhere. A good friend has passed away,” Dimitris (Jimmy "Jimbabway") Panagiotou, public relations manager of entertainment venues Central and Melrose Ballroom, told TNH.

Regarding the police investigations into the circumstances of the tragic car accident, so far no charges or responsibilities have been attributed to the 57-year-old driver of the truck into which the BMW crashed.

According to the arrangements from Riverdale Funeral Home, the reposing will be held on Wednesday, May 26, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church 10 Mill Road, New Rochelle, NY, 10-11 AM (closed casket) with funeral services immediately following.

Interment to follow at: Mt. Hope Cemetery 50 Jackson Avenue (Jackson Avenue at Saw Mill River Road) Hastings-on-Hudson, NY 10706.

Lunch at: The Royal Regency Hotel 165 Tuckahoe Rd. Yonkers, NY

In lieu of flowers the Tyras family kindly requests all donations cash and checks made payable to:
