U.S. Patent Office Cancels “Redskins” Trademark; Team Likely to Change Name

WASHINGTON, DC – The U.S. Patent office canceled a series of trademarks of the National Football League team Washington Redskins, ruling that the term “Redskins” is derogatory.

The NFL is likely to appeal the decision, though it is not feasible that it would proceed with an untrademarked team.

In all likelihood, then, the Washington Redskins will change their name.
