ATHENS – “Wherever I find myself, in every corner of the country, in every town and every market, the problems are the same and the fear is great,” stated main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras on Wednesday, after touring the market in the port city of Patras.
Tsipras said that he had long since warned about “the possibility that we will have a major social crisis if there are continued high prices, profiteering and a plundering of the income of SMEs, farmers, pensioners and workers.”
“The Greek people have understood that this government cannot and does not want to support the majority of society, which is suffering hardships and being plundered,” Tsipras said, adding: “Today from Patras I will say something that has been said before but which today takes on its true meaning and value, which is that, literally, if we don’t change, we will sink.”
Concluding, the main opposition leader underlined that the country urgently needs to change course, that society needs to find support and that it needs a progressive government which cares about social issues, in order to save whatever can be saved at this hour and to start the major work of rebuilding.
