Tsipras Accuses Mitsotakis of Not Telling the Greek People the Truth

September 10, 2020

ATHENS — "(Prime Minister Kyriakos) Mitsotakis is not telling the Greek people the truth" and "is engaging in secret diplomacy," main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance leader Alexis Tsipras said on Thursday. He called on the prime minister, even at this late date, to immediately reveal the documents he signed and what commitments Greece has made to Turkey.

In a post on Facebook, the leader of the main opposition stated that "we were all informed today by Mr. Mitsotakis' article in European newspapers, that he has signed off on commitments made by the country to Turkey, in a document that remains secret until today and whose exact contents no one knows."

Tsipras commented that "this is not the first time that the Greek people are informed by the foreign press about major initiatives by the Greek prime minister, on critical national issues."

He added that the prime minister "is making commitments, without informing anyone, but also without asking, as he should, for any authorisation to sign commitments. Not from the Council of Political Leaders, not from the Greek Parliament, not even from his cabinet."

"Even now, he has an obligation to immediately inform the Greek people and the political parties about the document he signed in secret with Turkey and the conditions to which Greece is bound," Tsipras concluded.
