Greek restaurants in the United States are, of course, mostly owned and run by Greek-Americans, but not always, as Freedman's in Staple Silver Lake, California is showing with adding a Greek chic to its Jewish food fare.
Greekman's was the name worked up by owner Jonah Freedman who told Eater Los Angeles that Greek food was underrepresented in the area despite a Greek-American community.
He said he decided to put a Greek flair and twist to his restaurant's offerings with lots of olive type entrees as well as the ubiquitous souvlaki to go along with lamb chops and even a blue-and-white menu, the colors of Greece.
Restaurants which survived the COVID-19 pandemic have been trying all sorts of ways to get and keep customers coming as it begins to recede and Greek food is a fan favorite across the country, even if you're looking for a brisket at Freedman's.
The menu is now heavily Greek, including Greek Panzanella salad, giant beans, grilled octopus and lemon, tzatziki and one you won't find likely anywhere else for dessert: olive oil ice cream. That's a new one on us.
