THI Summer Youth Academy: Transforming Lives One Game at a Time

August 6, 2024

ATHENS – The Hellenic Initiative successfully presented its first-ever Summer Youth Academy, focused on basketball and sponsored, designed, and implemented by THI for children aged 14-18. The Academy was held through most of July at the Lycée Léonin Athens.

“July was nothing short of magical as we launched our Summer Youth Academy, transforming the lives of underprivileged youth and fostering dreams through the power of sports,” THI said in a news release about the program offering “youth empowerment and leadership to 120 children at no cost, combining comprehensive basketball training with a series of educational, recreational, and empowering activities.”

‘Teamwork’, at the heart of the life lessons for the youth, was also reflected in the release: “Our programs thrive thanks to the support and dedication of our incredible Board. Their vision and commitment have been instrumental in the success of THI.”

Ted Leonsis, owner of several sports franchises, entrepreneur, and THI Board member, was the honorary Chair and presenting sponsor.

The release continued: “We are especially grateful to George P. Stamas, THI Board President, whose visionary ideas and support were crucial in bringing this particular program, among others, to life.” Stamas added that “we take great pride in THI’s inaugural summer camp, a distinctive academy and program that sets itself apart from other initiatives in the country. Aligned with THI’s overarching vision, we remain committed to implementing similar initiatives with our partners, striving to make a meaningful impact on the lives of Greek youth.”

Michael Printzos, THI Country Head, Greece, said, “our focus is not on discovering the next Greek basketball star or solely enhancing athletic skills. Our mission prioritizes the broader values that sports embody, thus fostering a culture that bridges societal divides.”

Program Highlights:

Earlier in the month the Academy kicked off with a celebrity basketball game featuring renowned athletes, THI Board members, diplomats – including U.S. Ambassador George Tsunis – and local celebrities.

In the rigorous daily training sessions, participants engaged in various sports activities, including soccer and basketball, that emphasized discipline, hard work, and skill development.

The comprehensive program included more than just physical training, offering life coaching sessions, excursions, inspirational speeches, and workshops that aimed to develop personal growth, leadership skills, and a strong sense of community.

This holistic approach was made possible by collaborating with the Hellenic Olympic Committee, the Hellenic Olympians Association, the Greek Basketball Federation, dedicated THI, staff, and THI groups like the New Leaders.

The Academy is a collaborative effort of THI with Eurohoops, a prominent Athens-based basketball organization that empowers underprivileged youth by building confidence and character.

THI expressed its gratitude to the Academy’s generous sponsors, including Ted Leonsis, Stelios Philanthropic Foundation, John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, Sprite, Pet City, Metropolitan College/AKMI, and Folloe Foundation. “

Founded in 2012, THI is a global non-profit organization that brings together Diaspora Greeks and Philhellenes to invest in Greece through programs focused on economic development and crisis relief. Since its founding, THI has invested more than $22 million in Greece, supporting promising startups and the most effective philanthropic organizations.
