ATHENS – Details will soon be announced regarding the construction of the new 140-kilometre border fence in Evros, Citizen Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos said on Monday in an interview with ANT1 TV. He noted that the top priority is border security, adding that Greece was ensuring the internationalisation of the issue by constantly briefing its partners and through FRONTEX’s involvement in preventing the entry of irregular migrants, as well as through the implementation of the “Akritas” Plan by the Greek Police and the army.
Theodorikakos pointed out that the number of irregular migrants who attempt to cross the border is 1,500 on a daily basis and that since the start of the year they have exceeded 160,000 people.
“No matter how long the Turks scheme and seek ways and means, they are not going to achieve anything… We are applying International Law, we are guarding the borders of Europe, our neighbours must finally respect this,” he added.
The minister also referred to the increase in the phenomenon of juvenile delinquency and the actions of the police to deal with it, as well as the new police bureaus for domestic violence, which will be staffed mainly by women.
