To the Editor:
The two former prime ministers, Mr. Karamanlis and Mr. Samaras, had a lot to say recently, and with what they said it was as if each of them wanted to express what they might want to do, or rather, what they have in the back of their minds.
Mr. Samaras, who has not gotten along so well with the Mitsotakis family, now with this speech wanted to emphasize that he does not agree with Mr. Mitsotakis because Samaras is right-wing and now that the Right is galloping in Europe he wanted to stand out from the current New Democracy government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Probably Mr. Samaras sees that the three small parties of the Right that are in Greece today and a large part of the New Democracy party would follow him, and maybe he sees some action that he could take, since the current climate favors such an idea. And let me say now that Samaras is the one who overthrew the elder Mitsotakis’ government and created his own party then, Political Spring. Then he formed a government with PASOK and Venizelos and now he is on the Right, which is advancing defiantly. Mr. Samaras is neither a fascist, nor a communist, nor a gold digger, nor a leftist. He is a right-wing patriot and now that the Right is rising in Europe, maybe he too will want to organize the Right in Greece. And I will say that Samaras is the man to do it – and he is capable of the unexpected.
There was also Mr. Karamanlis, who also had a lot to say and spoke about the national problems and was much more of a New Democracy stalwart than Samaras. He probably also has in mind the election that will take place in early 2025. However, both the unpredictable Samaras and the serious Karamanlis are aiming for the clever Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the son of Konstantinos Mitsotakis.
