NEW YORK – Meropi Kyriacou, the new Principal of The Cathedral School in Manhattan, was honored as The National Herald’s Educator of the Year.
Suddenly, 18 days after Joe Biden was forced to withdraw his candidacy for re-election to the presidency, Kamala Harris stood at the podium in an airplane hangar at Detroit Airport, with the Vice President’s plane, “Air Force 2,” visible in the background—a scene reminiscent of Trump—and began praising him, shouting “Joe, Joe,” and encouraging the large crowd of her supporters gathered there to do the same.
The chants of “Joe, Joe, Joe” and “We love Joe” gave a surreal image to the rally.
Kamala’s undoubtedly premeditated move must have a significant backstory. On one hand, Biden might be complaining, through intermediaries, that his vice president had forgotten him, while on the other hand, Harris’s aides might have argued that she needed to distance herself from him to avoid being burdened by the mistakes of his presidency, asserting that she needed to appear independent.
Ultimately, the view prevailed that Harris risked losing more than she stood to gain if she ignored him, which is why she started chanting “Joe.”
I’ve noted it before: Joe didn’t deserve this fate. Despite his many years in Washington, he is a good person and a very good president. However, he shouldn’t have run again, given his condition.
Many will remember Biden with love and gratitude.
But who would have expected that among his supporters would be Trump!
In a lengthy press conference a couple of days ago, the Republican presidential candidate repeatedly defended his former opponent.
“I’m not a fan of his, as you’ve probably noticed,” he said. “He had a tough debate. But that doesn’t mean you just take (the nomination) from him in this way… I hate that I’m defending him,” Trump added, “but he didn’t want to leave. He wanted to see if he could win.”
And just two days earlier, he was wondering on social media if there was any chance Biden would show up at the Democratic National Convention to try to “take back his nomination, starting with challenging me to another debate.”
Trump didn’t suddenly discover Biden’s virtues.
Nor can we forget all the things he’s said about him over the years.
Trump’s retrospective defense of Biden stems from his desire to attack Harris for ingratitude and because he himself might also be under pressure to withdraw.
Indeed, with the way the campaign has turned, Trump may fear he could share Joe’s fate.
