TRIBECA, NY – The Opening Gallery in Tribeca showcased a group exhibition, Collective Brain, on October 4, at 42 Walker Street, to challenge our perception of mental processes with an arrangement of corporeally provoking art pieces, connecting artists who work in divergent media and are convening from diverse localities.
The show was curated by Sozita Goudouna and featured a variety of works by artists from different cultural backgrounds, supporting contemporary art and international artists, while it fostered cultural engagement and exchanges between the United States and the globe.
“We are trying to create a collective space for global artists as well as those who are based in New York in order to showcase their work,” Sozita Goudouna told TNH, adding, “these artists include the ones who do not have a gallery representation in the art market yet.”
Contemplating the notion of the mind as a mechanism – a brain system responsible for spatial memory and navigation – Collective Brain offers different viewpoints about the brain and its billions of neurons by centering neurodiversity as the fundamental concept about how we can understand the physical and biological origins of human emotion in the brain, as well as the conception, exhibition, and reception of the artworks.
A section of the exhibition also attempts to comprehend and challenge perceptions about the operations of the non-human brain.
One of the many artists of the exhibition, Dan Reisner, spoke to TNH regarding his iconic sculpture of George Floyd. “I created this work a day after the story of George Floyd happened. I saw the video and I was totally shocked, and I felt like I had to do something about it.” He added, “When you watch the video and see how he struggled, the focus is on the head, a moment between life and death. For me it was really important to be very clear and brutal about the work, in order to reflect the realism of the story.”
The 22 artists that participated in the exhibition were, Alina Bliumis, Jeff Bliumis, Veronique Bourgoin, Alexandros Georgiou, Mat Chivers, Raúl Cordero, Yioula Hadjigeorgiou, Steven C. Harvey, Peggy Kliafa, Artemis Kotioni, Jessica Mitrani, Paula Meninato, Eleni Mylonas, Margarita Myrogianni, Warren Neidich, Alexander Polzin, Dan Reisner, Juli Susin, Dimitris Tragkas, Adonis Volanakis, Hans Weigant, and Vasilis Zarifopoulos.
The gallery supports the mission of the U.S. non-profit organization established in 2020, Greece in USA, founded by Sozita Goudouna. The organization is based in NYC with a global reach that promotes knowledge of contemporary and ancient Greek Culture while fostering international cultural cooperation, experimentation, and social engagement.
25% of all proceeds will be donated to the organization Luv Michael.org, which is committed to enriching the lives of autistic adults.
