NEW YORK – The Greek-American community was saddened by the passing of the President of the Mytilenian Society of America, Michalis Banis, who suddenly passed away on the Feast Day of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (August 15th) at the age of 65.
The Association’s Public Relations Officer, Michael Christodoulou, told the National Herald that Michalis Banis had recently faced a health issue, but his death was nonetheless unexpected.
“It was something sudden. We are talking about a young and strong man who was working, as he had a company that did electronic installations. This fact makes the sorrow even greater. We are not talking about someone of very advanced age with serious health problems, where we might say they found rest. Michalis was a great man. Unfortunately, it is as we say, we are just passing through life, and many things can take us off our path,” said Christodoulou.
Michalis Banis was born in Dafia, Mytilene, in 1959, a village near Kalloni, the capital of today’s Municipality of Western Lesvos. He attended primary school in Dafia and later secondary school in Kalloni. His father, Fotis Banis, was a baker and well-known in the local community.
In New York, Michalis Banis met his future wife, Kalliopi, who was originally from Nisyros. They married and had a son, Fotis, who stood out professionally from a young age and was even featured in a National Herald special edition. The family initially resided in Warwick in upstate New York, but soon moved to Astoria due to Michalis Banis’ professional obligations.
“What I have to say about Michalis is that we will remember him with fond memories. I remember when we honored Michael Dukakis at an event at the Crystal Palace in 2001, where he was present. He was active in our Association, had a pleasant way of collaborating, and I personally had an excellent working relationship with him. He was a kind man, which is a very important quality. When we organized our annual dinner, he always took care of the entire process. He was always there. The Board of Directors will be present at his final farewell and funeral. Additionally, we will donate a sum of money in his memory to a charitable organization,” said Christodoulou.
The wake for Michalis Banis was scheduled for August 18 and the funeral service took place on August 19 at the Church of St. Catherine and St. George in Astoria.
