Good Friday Services and Procession Draw Hundreds to St. Nicholas at Ground Zero

NEW YORK – The solemn ceremony of the procession with the ‘Epitaphios’ – the flowered bier of Christ – and the Lamenetations was experienced by worshippers on Good Friday evening at the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine at the World Trade Center.

Hundreds of people gathered in Lower Manhattan to commemorate the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ, reverently observing a centuries-old tradition of the Orthodox faith.

On Good Friday evening, the Divine Drama of Holy Week and the Passion of Christ culminates with the procession of the Epitaphios, decorated with the flowers of spring, by the hands of women according to tradition, symbolizing the mother, the Theotokos, who after bringing the Lord into the world had the heavy duty of bidding farewell to her beloved child.

The Orthodox Christian worshipers were joined by Roman Catholic Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who participated in the procession around the monuments and memorials of Ground Zero.
