For those seeking the best Greek dining experiences in Washington, D.C., native author George Pelecanos may have some insights, but Eater has compiled a list of standout new Greek restaurants in the city.
For the Greek-American community, food is more than sustenance—it is deeply tied to memory, culture, and tradition. Nicole Schaller, raised in a family steeped in Greek culture, knows this well. Summers spent with her “yiayia” in Greece were marked by meals that went beyond words, with food expressing love, warmth, and heritage.
After moving to Washington, D.C., Nicole hoped to find Greek restaurants that could offer a taste of home. But her early search was frustrating, as few places matched the authenticity she craved. She often had to rely on family-shipped ingredients to recreate the beloved recipes she grew up with.
Then, in 2023, Washington’s Greek food scene experienced a welcome revival with the opening of four new restaurants: Balos, Limani, Meli, and Philotimo 2.0. Nicole eagerly visited each one, curious to see if they could truly capture the essence of Greek cuisine—and more importantly, if they could earn her yiayia’s seal of approval.
These restaurants represent more than just new dining options in the capital; they symbolize a growing appreciation for Greek cuisine. From fresh Mediterranean ingredients to traditional dishes, each establishment offers a genuine taste of Greece, appealing to both Greek-Americans and those discovering the rich culinary heritage of the Mediterranean.
Nicole shared her insights on these new spots, noting that the fish at Balos “is worth it and tastes just like what you would order in Greece, whether at a taverna or a high-end restaurant.” Limani’s horta was “the most authentic” she had tasted outside of Greece. Meli, meanwhile, offers creative twists on classic Greek dishes, while Philotimo 2.0 stands out with its Greek-inspired cocktail bar, featuring unique drinks like tequila mixed with masticha from Chios. You might even spot George Pelecanos at one of these places.
