Teatro Grattacielo and Camerata Bardi to Present Three Events

NEW YORK – Teatro Grattacielo and Camerata Bardi will present three events to celebrate the opera company’s 26th anniversary this year, the first ever Giovanni Consiglio International Competition, Giordano’s Fedora, and Boito’s Mefistofele, Teatro Grattacielo’s directors Duane Printz and Stefanos Koroneos with Board President Enzo Pizzimenti, and in collaboration with Camerata Bardi Vocal Academy, announced in a news release on May 29.

Teatro Grattacielo launches its very first solo competition in September 2020, the Giovanni Consiglio International Competition, named after Giovanni Consiglio (1923-2012), an Italian tenor well known to the American public for his appearances in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas, and many other cities across the U.S., but also as the voice teacher of many star tenors including Fabio Armiliato.

The international jury is comprised by: Fabio Armiliato, Greek-born American symphony and opera conductor Kostis Protopapas, Lewis Ehlers, Ken Benson, Joseph Rescigno, Israel Gursky, Jorge Parodi, Filippo Giabatti, Artur Levy, Francesco Anile, Paola Antonucci, and Greek-American baritone Stefanos Koroneos.

The competition is open to all voices up to 40 years of age and will be entirely online through video submissions. More information about the competition is available online:

In October 2020 Teatro Grattacielo in collaboration with Global Vision Group and in accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines, will be filming Umberto Giordano’s Fedora This is a first for Teatro Grattacielo which is best known for performing live. The opera will be live streamed on various digital platforms including YouTube and will be made available for free to all opera lovers around the world. The opera was last performed in New York City in 1997 with the late Mirella Freni in the title role. This year, the title role of Fedora will be sung by Hungarian soprano Csilla Boross. Italian tenor Francesco Anile, known to NYC audiences for stepping in a few years ago at the Met as Otello in jeans and t-shirt, and as Canio in Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci with New York City Opera, will play Loris.

Italian baritone Marco Nistico will be singing the role of De Siriex along with Venezuelan soprano Maria Brea as Olga, winner of the Francesco Vinas Zarzuela Price Competition. The cast also features Ruben Casas, Eugenia Fortezza, Samuel White, Taehwan Ku, Michael Gracco, Darian Worell, Paolo Buffagni, Rich Agster, and Kinneret Ely.

In November 2020 (exact date to be determined) in collaboration with Beniamino Gigli Association in Recanati (Italy) Teatro Grattacielo will present on YouTube live excerpts from Boito’s Mefistofele. November 26 marks the 100th anniversary of Gigli’s Met debut as Faust in Mefistofele right after his La Scala debut in the same role in 1918 under the baton of Arturo Toscanini. Bass Alessandro Tirotta will be singing the role of Mefistofele, tenor Thomas Massey will play Faust, and soprano Francesca Mondanaro will play Margerita.

Teatro Grattacielo also announced the creation of their brand-new blog dedicated to the world of opera in collaboration with NYC-based Italian journalist Davide Mamone.

Following outstanding critical successes in Teatro Grattacielo productions over the past decade, conductor Israel Gursky will be returning once again to lead the Fedora performance.

Teatro Grattaciello continues its presentations of great, but rarely-performed, operas of the Italian verismo. In its first twenty-five years the company has presented the North American premieres of I Cavalieri di Ekebù, Guglielmo Ratcliff, La Farsa Amorosa, and Sakùntala, and the New York premieres of L’Arlesiana and La Nave along with many other operas that had not been heard in New York in over 70 years.
