SYRIZA’s Turbulence Sees Leftists Falling Behind PASOK in Survey

September 3, 2024

ATHENS – A growing rebellion within the major opposition SYRIZA party, where party chief Stefanos Kasselakis is being challenged, has caused such turmoil that the Leftists have fallen behind the PASOK Socialists in popularity.

This was according to a survey by the company MRB for Open TV, which showed PASOK—where leader Nikos Androulakis is also under pressure—garnering 10.5% of the vote, while SYRIZA lagged at a paltry 8.5%.

The dismal findings showed SYRIZA sinking like a stone as headlines are dominated by ongoing disputes between Kasselakis and his critics, with more dissidents leaving the parliamentary group due to his leadership style.

The ruling New Democracy had just 21.6%, leaving little room for celebration as the Conservatives have been hit by high prices and a series of scandals, but they remain untouchably in the lead.

Despite its rise to second place, PASOK slipped from 11.5% of the vote in the European Parliament elections, a result so disappointing that party leader Nikos Androulakis is now fighting for his political survival.

Androulakis and his main challenger in the upcoming party elections, Athens Mayor Haris Doukas—who said he won’t give up his position if he wins—are locked in a tight contest, though there are other candidates.

The survey showed Androulakis, who has been unable to boost the party’s fortunes, with 25.5% and Doukas with 21.9%, leaving the Socialists almost as troubled and fractured as SYRIZA, giving Mitsotakis no real challengers.

It’s worse for SYRIZA, though, as the party that won 36.34% of the vote in the September 2015 snap elections is now barely ahead of the politically irrelevant far-right nationalist Greek Solution.

There were signs of right-wing parties gaining traction among voters disenchanted with the ruling government and the main rivals, with Voice of Reason at 3.4% and the ultra-religious Niki showing 2.3%.
