SYRIZA: Moria Tragedy Demonstrates the Government’s Criminal Responsibilities

September 9, 2020

ATHENS — "Today's tragedy in Moria demonstrates the criminal responsibilities of (Prime Minister Kyriakos) Mitsotakis and (Migration Policy and Asylum Minister Notis) Mitarachi," main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance said on Wednesday adding that "New democracy condemns the local community, the refugees and the migration to misery."

SYRIZA accusses the goverment that in its election campaign it promised to close the Moria hotspot but the only thing it achieved was to receive a structure hosting 5,600 people and to exceed 20,000 before it started the decongestion programme.

It accused Mitsotakis of turning Greece in a warehouse of souls because he did not press for a comprehensive EU initiative adding that the government with its choices led to today's tragic result in Moria.

SYRIZA called on everyone to refuse turning the islands into prisons and asked for immediate European initiatives of solidarity and coordination.
