SYRIZA Leader Tsipras: Mitsotakis Brought the Recession Before the Pandemic

ATHENS – "Mr. Mitsotakis has brought the recession before the pandemic" stated main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras in an interview with Kathimerini newspaper on Saturday and accused the government that the "explosion of unemployment, of lockdowns and recession is not the result of the pandemic but is a strategic choice".

On European Commission's proposal for a European package, he referred to a "delayed but quality promoted reaction" as the proposal includes a series of the progressive forces and of the South's claims".

On the possibility of early elections, he said it would be an opportunistic move on Mitsotakis' part underlining that he is not afraid underlining that "the heart of the major progressive and democratic party, sooner or later, will be again in position to claim the social majority".

Referring to the Greek-Turkish relations, he said that today we have very worrying developments in terms of our national issues and Mr. Mitsotakis does not wish a dialogue for a common national line.

On the issue of the EEZ blocks, Tsipras appeared concerned over the continuous escalating tension from the Turkish part.

Asked if we should go to the Hague with Turkey, he said that the strategy should be to agree on the EEZ with Albania, Italy and Egypt and immediately afterwards to set our coordinates.

He said he would support the government if it decided to start a negotiation for the recourse to the Hague "if it is part of a comprehensive strategy" which, as he said "would not be a suicide operation but a comprehensive plan which would be the conclusion of a whole strategy".
