SYRIZA Leader Kasselakis Likely to Attend New York Greek Parade

NEW YORK – With the confirmed and hoped-for participation of some of Greece’s top leaders, the Greek Independence Parade on 5th Avenue on Sunday, April 14 promises to be one of the most memorable ever.

The celebration of the the 203rd anniversary of the Rebirth of the Hellenic Nation includes events parallel to the parade, and in the background is the historic postal voting participation of the Omogenia in the the upcoming European Parliament elections.

According to information obtained by The National Herald, Stefanos Kasselakis, president of the official opposition SYRIZA party, as well the president of PASOK, Nikos Androulakis, have explored the possibility of being in New York for the largest event of the Greek Diaspora, as well  for the events preceding it, such as the flag-raising ceremony at Bowling Green Park and a Hilton hotel event.

The Parade Committee has already confirmed the participation of the Minister of National Defense, Nikos Dendias, who will officially represent the New Democracy governing party, and the Vice President of the Greek Parliament, Ioannis Plakiotakis, is also expected, as well as the president of the Inter-Party Committee for the Greek Diaspora, Philippos Fotiadis, and MPs Milena Apostolaki (PASOK) and Theofilos Xanthopoulos (SYRIZA).

TNH’s sources report that the presence of Kasselakis seems, at present, more likely, while Nikos Androulakis’ team is said to have requested information about the program of events, without, however, any final decision having been made.

In any case, while the Parade Committee does not have any official confirmation or information regarding the arrival of the two leaders of the opposition parties, movement towards final arrangements will move forward in the coming days, especially after Kasselakis completes his Greek military service, which will remove a series of formal impediments regarding his public activities.

Finally, other sources have informed TNH that the well-known journalist Giorgos Aftias will also travel to New York for the parade with his family, in view of his upcoming candidacy on the New Democracy’s EU ballot.
