SYRIZA Breakway Dissidents Parliamentary Group Called New Left

ATHENS – A new parliamentary group formed by 11 former lawmakers of SYRIZA, who quit in protest over the new leadership of Stefanos Kasselakis, has named itself The New Left – Nea Aristera – in an apparent swipe at him.

They stopped short of creating a new political party but bitterness remained after they said he was moving SYRIZA away from its leftists roots and more toward the center and complained about his business background.

It will be led by Alexis Charitsis, a veteran stalwart from SYRIZA before departing, while the former spokesman for SYRIZA, Nasos Iliopoulos and former finance minister Euclid Tsakalots will be parliamentary representatives.

“We are not announcing a new political party, we are starting a new collective venture. We want to do politics differently,” said Charitsis, as the fallout continues from Kasselakis coming out of nowhere to win SYRIZA’s helm in June.

He replaced former leader and one-time premier Alexis Tsipras, who quit after being routed in June elections by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ Conservatives, leading to a battle to take over the leftists.

Is Greece reformable?" "Who doubts that if it wasn't for the Bank of Greece, we might not be in the euro after the adventure of 2015?" he said.
