Syrians Posing as Volleyball Players Attempted to Illegally Depart From Greece

ATHENS — Nine Syrians posing as volleyball players attempted to illegally travel from Athens International Airport Elefterios Venizelos to Vienna on Sunday night but were arrested.

According to police, the nine Syrians had fake identity cards and, in order to deceive the police, had arrived together at the airport wearing matching sports uniforms and sports bags in order to look like a volleyball team. During the police check it was revealed that they do not belong to any team and that their aim was to illegally depart from Greece using fake travel documents.

The nine suspects were led before an Athens prosecutor.
