September 14, 2020

ATHENS — Prices of standard baskets of goods in Greek supermarkets are significantly lower compared with those of the UK, Spain and Portugal, the Research Institute of Retail Consumer Goods (IELKA) said in a report released on Monday.

The survey, conducted in Spetember, made price comparisons with and without VAT, which is different in each country. The survey was based on prices in 20 sub-categories of products included in a standard basket of purchases. These sub-categories are examined on a sample of more than 2,000 product prices and 20 different supermarket chairns in four countries to reach average prices.

The survey showed that these three European countries have a significantly more expensive basket compared with Greece, by 12 pct in Spain, 17 pct in the UK and 9.0 pct in Portugal. These results changed significantly if VAT was deducted (Spain was up 19 pct, the UK up 26 pct and Portugal up 10 pct).

The survey was conducted on prices at supermarket chains in Greece, including: Sklavenitis, AB Vasilopoulos, My Market, Masoutis, Galaxias, Market In, Halkiadakis. In the UK: Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Waitrose, Ocado. In Spain: Eroski, Mercadona, El Corte Inglés, Carrefour, Dia. In Portugal: Pingo Doce, El Corte Inglés, Intermarché, Continente, Salgo, Apolonia, E.Leclerc

ATHENS - The growing use of Point-of-Service (POS) machines tying businesses directly to the tax department when transactions are made has helped cut deep into Greece’s shadow economy of using cash to avoid paying taxes.
