Strong Earthquake Shakes Greek Island of Karpathos

October 19, 2021

ATHENS — An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale shook the island of Karpathos on Tuesday at 08:32.

The quake’s epicentre was located in the sea area 127 km southeast of Karpathos, the Geodynamics Institute of the National Observatory of Athens said.

Seismologists are reassuring about the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred earlier on Tuesday southeast of the island of Karpathos.

“There is no concern,” Professor Akis Tselentis, director of the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, noting that the epicentre was located beneath the sea.
