Stoltenberg: There Is No Agreement, only Technical Talks at a Military Level

September 4, 2020

BRUSSELS — Only technical talks at a military level are currently taking place at NATO between Greece and Turkey, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg underlined at a press conference in Brussels on Friday, and he clarified that there is no agreement between the two sides.

The aim of the talks was to "establish mechanisms for military de-confliction to reduce the risk of incidents and accidents in the Eastern Mediterranean," he added.

"No agreement has been reached on this mechanism yet," he said, noting that these are only technical talks rather than negotiations.

"They are more technical talks than negotiations on the existing disagreement between Greece and Turkey. So they aim to complement and not replace Germany's efforts to mediate politically for a de-escalation," he underlined. "While there so many ships in the Eastern Mediterranean, we believe there is need for technical discussions on how to establish an enhanced mechanisms to avoid conflict. There is no agreement yet but the talks have started," he said.

ATHENS - A rapprochement of sorts that has seen tensions dialed down between them doesn’t mean Greece isn’t still wary of Greece, said Defense Minister Nikos Dendias, saying there is still an “existential threat” despite warmer ties.
