Stavros “Steve the Ice Cream Man” Stathopoulos Dies in Home Accident

ROSEDALE, NY – Stavros “Steve the Ice Cream Man” Stathopoulos, 69, was fatally electrocuted on June 29 while attempting to fix a bathroom light in his Rosedale home, his wife, Ourania, said, the New York Daily News reported.

She tried to drag him away but was jolted herself, the News reported.

Stathopoulos, who immigrated to the United States from Greece many decades ago, drove an ice cream truck in Queens for 40 years before retiring in 2012, the News wrote.

“That was his job when he first got to the States and started working in restaurants and then he got involved in the ice cream business, Dandouras told the News. “When you’re an immigrant, you do what you need to do. … He loved life, no day was the same for him.”

His loyal customers created a Facebook page for him, threw him a surprise party in 2015, and since his death have left numerous condolences on his page: “Steve the Ice Cream Man.”
