Stavros Niarchos Foundation Grants Support US Programs

ATHENS – The Board of Directors of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation approved 67 new grants, totaling €11.3 million, during its April 2015 bi-annual meeting.

The new grants cover the Foundation’s four main programmatic areas (Arts & Culture, Education, Health & Sports and Social Welfare) and provide support to international and Greek non-profit organizations.

In the area of Arts and Culture—through 17 grants—the Foundation is supporting creative initiatives in Greece and abroad, which focus on accessibility and education and promote Greek culture. In the area of Education, the Foundation, through 15 new grants, supports the implementation of research and educational initiatives, and is providing infrastructure-related funding to a number of organizations and institutions in Greece and internationally. In the area of Health and Sports, the 18 new grants support the upgrade of hospital units, help address critical healthcare issues worldwide and promote the significance of sports in achieving a healthier lifestyle. Finally, in the area of Social Welfare, the Foundation—through 17 new grants—supports organizations and initiatives which focus on caring for the most vulnerable population groups worldwide.

Andreas Dracopoulos, co-president of the Board of Directors of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation, stated: “This latest cycle of grants continues, complements and reinforces our philosophy to help and support, to the extent possible, people and communities most in need, both in Greece and around the world. The continuing socioeconomic challenges strengthen our resolve to act decisively by supporting organizations whose work and actions have the potential to significantly contribute to building a better tomorrow for all.”

In addition to its regular grant-making activities, the Foundation continues its €100,000,000 ($130,000,000) Recharging the Youth initiative, and has implemented a number of grants to help create new opportunities for Greece’s younger generations that are severely impacted by the country’s high unemployment rate. The Foundation recognizes that changing the current landscape cannot be attained through the commitment of funds only, however significant they may be. The creation of new opportunities requires innovation and the collaboration and convergence of different sectors including public, private, and philanthropy.
