UPPER DARBY, PA – ST. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Upper Darby held its First Annual Golf Outing on June 14 to benefit the St. Demetrios Greek Language School, after much planning and delays due to COVID-19, at the Llanerch Country Club in Havertown, PA, with God providing the perfect golf day.
The event was a tremendous success with 82 golfers participating, many generous sponsors and plenty of volunteers making sure the event ran as smoothly as possible. The Ball-Drop, putting contest, 50-50 raffles, and various golfing awards kept everyone engaged during the event. The air was filled with laughter, comradery with friends new and old and the distinctive aroma of St. Demetrios’ famous homemade “Pites”, souvlakia and kontosouvli. Of course, a “Greek-style” golf outing would not be complete without an endless supply of tsipouro and ouzo to wash it all down. John Ginis and Christos Tsimoulis, members of the Parish Council, took the initiative and worked very hard, along with all the volunteers, to organize this successful event benefiting the beloved St. Demetrios Greek Language School.
St. Demetrios Parish Council President Michael Economou said: “We all take great pride in our School and look forward to welcoming all our students and parents back in September and in-person. Recently, we upgraded our facilities by adding more classrooms, upgrading our lavatories and installing state-of-the-art interactive projectors in all the classrooms. In addition to our wonderful teaching staff, this September, our students will be greeted by a new school director who will not only build on the successes of our Greek Language School but implement new ideas enhancing the overall learning experience.”
Economou continued: “The benefits of this event are multi-faceted. The money generated allows St. Demetrios Greek Language School to continue providing an excellent learning experience to all students and at every level. The bonds created by all those involved working together for a common purpose strengthens the very foundations of our beloved St. Demetrios Community ensuring a bright future for all to enjoy. May God continue to bless us all!”
