Sir Michael Llewellyn-Smith Presents His Book on Venizelos, Oct. 3 via Zoom

LOS ANGELES – The celebration of 200 years of Modern Greece continues at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts as The Basil P. Caloyeras Center for Modern Greek Studies welcomes renowned historian Sir Michael Llewellyn-Smith for a presentation via Zoom on Sunday, October 3 at 12 PM Pacific Time on his book Venizelos: The Making of a Greek Statesman 1864-1914 (Hurst & Oxford UP, 2021).

Sir Michael Llewellyn-Smith is a former British ambassador in Athens and a historian of Greece, author of (among others) Ionian Vision: Greece in Asia Minor 1919-1922, and of the recent biographical study of Eleftherios Venizelos: Venizelos: The Making of a Greek Statesman, 1864-1914. He studied at New College Oxford, and took his doctorate in the modern history of Greece at St. Antony’s college Oxford. He served in the British Diplomatic Service in London, Moscow, Paris, Warsaw, and Athens.

He was awarded the CMG in 1990 and the KCVO in 1996. He is an Honorary Fellow of St. Antony's College Oxford, a Vice President and member of the Council of the British School at Athens, member of the Council of the Anglo-Hellenic League, Vice President of the Bristol Institute of Greece, Rome and the Classical Tradition, Honorary Fellow of the Eleftherios K. Venizelos National Research Foundation in Chania, and Patron of the Friends of Mount Athos.

Llewellyn-Smith is a visiting Professor at King's College London. He has been a visiting Fellow of the British School at Athens, visiting Fellow at Princeton University, foreign Fellow of the Onassis Foundation, and holder of the Venizelos chair of Modern Greek Studies at the American College of Greece (Deree College) for 2009-2010.

The Caloyeras Center co-hosts this event with the Greek Embassy in the U.S. and welcomes back Her Excellency, the Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic to the U.S., Alexandra Papadopoulou, for the opening remarks to Sir Michael Llewellyn-Smith’s presentation.
