Simotas Supplies Astoria’s Senior Citizens with Additional Personal Protective Equipment

September 16, 2020

NEW YORK – New York State Assemblymember Aravella Simotas distributed personal protective equipment (PPE) to senior citizens at the HANAC George Douris Tower and the Archbishop Iakovos Senior Residence in Astoria. As New York State continues to adjust to the ‘new normal’ of life during the current pandemic, Simotas is turning her attention to some of the most vulnerable members of her constituency.

“Our seniors are more likely to experience the worst symptoms of COVID-19, so it is necessary to make sure they receive additional protective gear to remain safe as they navigate the community,” said Simotas.

Over 1 in 5 facilities faced a staff shortage or severe shortage of PPE in early July 2020, when staff members at nursing homes across the country were forced to wear makeshift gear to protect both themselves and the senior citizens most vulnerable to mortality from contracting the Coronavirus.

"We are always grateful and appreciative of Assemblymember Simotas’ contributions to our older adult population, said Stacy Bliagos, Executive Director of HANAC. Time and time again, Assemblymember Simotas has proven her dedication to our Senior Centers and we are thrilled to have her support during such a difficult time."

Providing senior citizens with additional support has been part of Assemblywoman Simotas’ efforts to advocate for disenfranchised populations. In the past, Simotas has hosted events to prevent scams targeted toward the elderly; proposed legislation to support senior citizens’ affordable housing; and advocated for seniors-only shopping hours in supermarkets to be adopted statewide.
