Meropi Kyriacou Honored as TNH Educator of the Year
NEW YORK – Meropi Kyriacou, the new Principal of The Cathedral School in Manhattan, was honored as The National Herald’s Educator of the Year.
My first lesson on aromatic and medicinal plants was from a great teacher and professor regarding essential oils. I can say that his perspective deeply influenced me, and perhaps that’s why this exciting journey lasted so many years, on a professional, research, and personal level.
I remember his first statement: “Do not fear aromatics, just get informed correctly!” Essential oils and aromatic plants, in general, are used worldwide by billions of people. But what about.. ‘special categories’? And he continued: “My son has been using essential oils since the day he was born, just like you… but you don’t know it.” We use essential oils and scents throughout our lives, whether we know it or not. From laundry detergent to the soap we wash our hands or baby with… Everyone somehow uses natural or artificial scents. However, as with almost everything, the way they are used is important for their effectiveness. Is there a risk? Yes, as with all things. Are there good results? Yes, only if done correctly.
Let’s start with a basic difference. Exposure to artificial fragrances has been shown to burden health. There is a great fuss about room fragrances and scented candles. In contrast, natural scents such as essential oils can be used in our spaces and have positive effects on our lives from the first day we use them. For example, lavender can relax us and help us sleep, mandarin can give us energy. Mint and eucalyptus… can clear our nose from a cold!
* The above is not medical advice but mere suggestions for improving your diet. Before reach herbal use you should consult your doctor, especially those who have health issues, are pregnant or are under the age of 6.
