September 26, 2024

ATHENS – Beloved singer Marinella – Kyriaki Papadopoulou – collapsed on stage during a concert at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and was taken to Hygeia Hospital where she was reportedly treated for a stroke in the Intensive Care Unit.

Videos posted on social media, which drew criticism for being put out, showed the 86-year-old singing, losing her balance and suddenly turning and collapsing as musicians rushed to her aid.

People close to the singer told Kathimerini that Marinella was in good spirits before the start of the event and joked with artists and friends who visited her in her dressing room, no sign anything was wrong. The concert was then canceled.

The event was in honor of her long career and also featured renowned Greek singer Antonis Remos and a large orchestra backing her at the country’s most famous and oldest theater and performance venue under the Acropolis.

She was born in 1938 in Thessaloniki to refugee parents from Constantinople. She began exploring singing at 15 years old and has released 66 solo albums during her long career. The incident saw wishes being sent to her from around the world on social media.
