Reluctant NATO Chief Stoltenberg Coming to Athens

NATO Secretary Jens Stoltenberg, who has steered clear of repeated Turkish provocations against Greece, although both belong to the defense alliance, is due to come to Athens Oct. 10 to meet Greek officials although it wasn’t said what will be discussed.

Stoltenberg will meet with President Prokopis Pavlopoulos and then with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for a joint news conference with reporters. NATO, needing Turkey for the war on terrorism, has said nothing about Turkish fighter jets constantly going into Greek air space, with Greek fighter pilots then intercepting them and engaging in mock dogfights, creating the prospect of a conflict.

Turkey has also sent warships past Greek islands and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has threatened to unleash on Greek islands millions of refugees and migrants who came to his country from the Middle East and other countries in hopes of reaching the European Union.
