Qatar Now Looks to Cyprus for Investments: Ports, Banks Eyed for Deals

NICOSIA – Qatar, which has backed Cyprus being used as part of a maritime corridor to bring humanitarian aid to Palestinians trapped in the Gaza Strip during Israel’s war there in a hunt for Hamas terrorists, is also mulling investments on the island.

More than a year after being tied to a corruption scandal and allegedly trying to bribe members of the European Parliament to gain influence there, the Mideast nation is also looking at deals that include Greece and Cyprus.

Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani – who also went to Athens to meet Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and make deals there, came to Cyprus and said his country was interested in ports and banks on the island.

Al Thani and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides held talks and agreed to set up a working group to gauge progress made in forging closer economic and political ties, an unnamed Cypriot official told the Associated Press.

With one of the largest investment funds in the world funded by its vast energy deposits, Qatar is still a sought-after investor in high-end projects as well as tourism, agriculture, and real estate, Cyprus seen ripe for all of those.
